Corporate

Partner Colin Winter is clear about what sets IWG’s corporate department apart from firms of similar size, and even bigger firms. “It’s the quality of the work. There are large law firms desperate to do the work we do,” he says before reeling off a list of recent deals.

These range from a $40m pre-IPO investment in a Chinese mining group and subsequent listing on the HKSE, to a $200m joint venture to buy oil and grain storage terminals in Brazil. “They’re exciting deals”, he says. “We are frequently opposite ‘magic circle’ firms or very large firms, either here or abroad.”

Pragmatic and Focused

Colin explains IWG’s ability to punch so far above its weight as being due to being incredibly pragmatic and focused in its advice. “Getting the deal done is absolutely crucial,” says Colin. “As long as it’s the right deal for the client.”

This is what client Jag Johal of Yoo Capital describes as IWG’s “commercial acumen and commercial ability.” Similarly, Serge Dupont of Comtec SA praises the firm for “always finding solutions” while Simon Turner of private equity firm Kuvera International says:  “IWG are solution finders. They won’t let go until they find one.”

Colin says that being pragmatic does not mean IWG compromises on the technical aspects of its advice. Solicitor David Grabiner agrees: “You are aspiring to quality in everything you do.  You are very much encouraged to ask questions, of clients or colleagues, in order to fully understand all aspects of a given scenario.”

From a lawyer’s point of view, working in a smaller firm has advantages. Ben Manners joined the firm as a trainee in 2005 and became a partner in the corporate department eight years later. “Over my time here I’ve worked primarily on M&A and private equity transactions, but have also done plenty of commercial and funding work. So there is a good variety, which means you have to have a wide range of skills,” he says. “In contrast, friends who have gone to larger firms are required to specialise much earlier.”

“We do superb work here,” concludes Colin. “I know it’s a cliché, but we have wonderful clients who we’ve been lucky enough to build very strong relationships with.”
